General Topology, chapter IX, § 3. Metrizable groups, valued fields, normed spaces and algebras

Proposition 13 is not necessarily true for a non-complete normed algebra. For example, in the algebra C(I;R)C(I; \mathbf{R}) of all finite continuous real-valued functions on I=[0,1]I = [0, 1] [the norm being ∣∣x∣∣=sup⁡t∈I∣x(t)∣||x|| = \sup_{t \in I} |x(t)|], the subalgebra PP of all polynomials in tt (restricted to II) is not complete; if x(t)x(t) is any non-constant polynomial, then 1+εx1 + \varepsilon x is arbitrarily close to the identity element 1 of PP when ε\varepsilon is arbitrarily small, but 1+εx1 + \varepsilon x is not a unit in PP. However, if AA is a non-complete normed algebra, GG its group of units, A^\hat{A} the completion of AA, then GG is a subgroup of the group of units of A^\hat{A}, and therefore the topology induced on GG by the topology of AA is compatible with the group structure of GG.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
