General Topology, chapter X, § 3. Special function spaces

Let X,YX, Y be two topological spaces, not necessarily uniformizable. For each compact subset KK of XX and each open subset UU of YY, let T(K,U)T(K, U) be the set of all u∈C(X;Y)u \in C(X; Y) such that u(K)⊂Uu(K) \subset U. The topology on C(X;Y)C(X; Y) generated by the sets T(K,U)T(K, U) is called the topology of compact convergence or the compact-open topology; and we denote by Cc(X;Y)C_c(X; Y) the topological space obtained by endowing C(X;Y)C(X; Y) with this topology.

If YY is a uniform space it follows from Theorem 2 that this definition agrees with that given in § 1, no. 3.

If HH is a subset of C(X;Y)C(X; Y) we shall say that the topology induced on HH by that of Cc(X;Y)C_c(X; Y) is the compact-open topology on HH.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
