Algebra, VIII, p. 282, § 15. Brauer Groups
Let A be a central simple K-algebra of finite degree, and let L be an extension of K of finite degree that is a splitting field for A. Let V be a simple -module, so that the natural morphism End is an isomorphism. Let C be the ring End. Then C is similar to , and the image of is a maximal commutative subalgebra of C.
We identify A with a subring of . We view V as a K-vector space. The ring C is the commutant of in End. It is a central simple K-algebra of finite degree, and the homomorphism from to End is an isomorphism (VIII, p. 260, Theorem 6, a)). Consequently, the K-algebras A and are similar (VIII, p. 279, Proposition 3).
Let be the ring of homotheties of the L-vector space V; it is the commutant of End in End (VIII, p. 82, Corollary 1). Now, the K-algebra End is generated by and ; therefore, in End(V), we have
End,
where for any subset B of End(V), the commutant of B in End is denoted by . So is a maximal commutative subalgebra of C (VIII, p. 261, Lemma 3), and therefore also of . The mapping is a K-algebra isomorphism from L to . This proves the lemma.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
