Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 2. Root system of a split semi-simple Lie algebra

Let (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) be a split semi-simple Lie algebra, Φ\Phi an invariant symmetric bilinear form on g\mathfrak{g}, and W the Weyl group of (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}). Then the restriction Φ′\Phi ' of Φ\Phi to h\mathfrak{h} is invariant under W. Moreover, if Φ\Phi is non-degenerate, so is Φ′\Phi '.

Let α∈R\alpha \in R, let XαX_{\alpha} be a non-zero element of gα,ρ\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha},\rho the associated representation of sl(2,k)\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2, k) on g\mathfrak{g}, and π\pi the representation of SL(2,k)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{L}(2, k) on g\mathfrak{g} compatible with ρ\rho. Then Φ\Phi is invariant under ρ\rho, and hence under π(\pi (§1, no. 4). In particular, Φ′\Phi ' is invariant under θα(t)∣h\theta_{\alpha}(t)|\mathfrak{h} (no. 2), and hence under W. The last assertion follows from Prop. 1 (i).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
