Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 2. Root system of a split semi-simple Lie algebra

Let α,β\alpha ,\beta be roots of (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) and let ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\langle \cdot ,\cdot \rangle be a non-degenerate invariant symmetric bilinear form on g(\mathfrak{g}(for example the Killing form of g)\mathfrak{g}).

(i) If α+β≠0,gα\alpha +\beta \not= 0,\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha} and gβ\mathfrak{g}^{\beta} are orthogonal. The restriction of ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\langle \cdot ,\cdot \rangle to gα×g−α\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha}\times \mathfrak{g}^{-\alpha} is non-degenerate. The restriction of ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\langle \cdot ,\cdot \rangle to h\mathfrak{h} is non-degenerate.

(ii) Let x∈gα,y∈g−αx\in \mathfrak{g}^{\alpha},y\in \mathfrak{g}^{-\alpha} and h∈hh\in \mathfrak{h}. Then [x,y]∈h[x, y]\in \mathfrak{h} and

⟨h,[x,y]⟩=α(h)⟨x,y⟩ \langle h,[x, y]\rangle =\alpha (h)\langle x, y\rangle

Assertion (i) is a particular case of Prop. 10 (iii) of Chap. VII, §1, no. 3. If x∈gα,y∈g−αx\in \mathfrak{g}^{\alpha},y\in \mathfrak{g}^{-\alpha} and h∈hh\in \mathfrak{h}, we have [x,y]∈gα−α=h[x, y]\in \mathfrak{g}^{\alpha-\alpha}=\mathfrak{h}, and

⟨h,[x,y]⟩=⟨[h,x],y⟩=⟨α(h)x,y⟩=α(h)⟨x,y⟩ \langle h,[x, y]\rangle =\langle [h, x], y\rangle =\langle \alpha (h)x, y\rangle =\alpha (h)\langle x, y\rangle

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
