Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 2. Root system of a split semi-simple Lie algebra

A Chevalley system for (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) is a family (Xα)α∈R(X_{\alpha})_{\alpha\in R} such that

(i) Xα∈gαX_{\alpha}\in \mathfrak{g}^{\alpha} for all α∈R\alpha \in R;

(ii) [Xα,X−α]=−Hα[X_{\alpha}, X_{-\alpha}] =-H_{\alpha} for all α∈R\alpha \in R;

(iii) the linear map from g\mathfrak{g} to g\mathfrak{g} which is equal to −1-1 on h\mathfrak{h} and which takes XαX_{\alpha} to X−αX_{-\alpha} for all α∈R\alpha \in R is an automorphism of g\mathfrak{g}.

The extension of this definition to the case where (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) is split reductive is immediate.

We shall show (§4, no. 4, Cor. of Prop. 5) that Chevalley systems for (g,h)(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) exist.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
