Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IX, § 4. Root system associated to a compact group

If G is commutative, V~\widetilde{V} is the direct sum of the V~λ(G)\widetilde{V}_{\lambda}(G) for λ∈X(G)\lambda \in X(G).

Since ρ\rho is semi-simple (§1, no. 1), it suffices to prove the lemma in the case in which ρ\rho is simple. In that case, the commutant Z of ρ(G)\rho (G) in End( V~\widetilde{V}) reduces to homotheties (Algebra, Chap. VIII, §3, no. 2, Th. 1); thus, the image of the homomorphism ρ~\widetilde{\rho} is contained in the subgroup C∗.1V\mathbf{C}^*.1_V of GL( V~\widetilde{V}), and there exists λ∈X(G)\lambda \in X(G) such that V~=V~λ(G)\widetilde{V} = \widetilde{V}_{\lambda}(G).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
