Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IX, § 4. Root system associated to a compact group
The homomorphism is injective if and only if generates the -module X(T).
The homomorphism is injective if and only if its restriction to T is injective (§2, no. 6, Prop. 9). Further, since the canonical homomorphism is injective, we can replace by . It then follows from (7) that the kernel of the restriction of to T is the intersection of the kernels of the elements of . Thus, the conclusion follows from Prop. 2 of no. 1.
The linear representation of in extends to a homomorphism of -Lie algebras
Moreover, recall (no. 1) that we have associated to every element of X(T) a linear form on such that
(exp). (10)
Recall finally (Chap. VII, §1, no. 1) that, for any map , we denote by the vector subspace of consisting of the such that for all .
We now deduce from (7) and loc. cit., Prop. 3:
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
