Let kk be a commutative field of characteristic zero, V a vector space over kk, and Ψ\Psi a separating quadratic form on V. Let Γ∈S2(V∗)\Gamma \in \mathbf{S}^2(V^*) (resp. Γ∗∈S2(V)\Gamma^*\in \mathbf{S}^2(V)) be the element ssociated to Ψ\Psi (resp. the inverse form of Ψ\Psi ). Denote by Q the endomorphism of S(V)\mathbf{S}(V) given by taking the product with Γ∗\Gamma^*, by Δ\Delta the endomorphism of S(V)\mathbf{S}(V) given by taking the inner product with Γ\Gamma, and by hh the endomorphism of S(V)\mathbf{S}(V) that reduces on Sr(V)\mathbf{S}^r(V) to multiplication by −n2−r-\frac{n}{2}-r. a) If (xi)1≤i≤n(x_i)_{1\leq i\leq n} is an orthonormal basis of V, then Q(P)=12(∑xi2).PQ(P) =\frac{1}{2}(\sum x^2_i).P and Δ(P)=12∑∂2P∂x2i\Delta (P) =\frac{1}{2}\sum\frac{\partial^2P}{\partial x^{2i}} for P∈S(V)P\in \mathbf{S}(V).

b) Prove the formulas [Δ,Q]=−h,[h,Δ]=2Δ,[h,Q]=−2Q[\Delta ,Q] =-h,[h, \Delta ] = 2\Delta ,[h,Q] =-2Q.

c) Let HrH_r be the subspace of Sr(V)\mathbf{S}^r(V) annihilated by Δ\Delta (“harmonic homogeneous polynomials of degree rr”). Deduce from b) that there is a direct sum decomposition, stable under O(Ψ)\mathbf{O}(\Psi ), given by

Sr(V)=Hr⊕\mathbf{S}^r(V) = H_r\oplus QHr−2⊕Q2Hr−4⊕⋯_{r-2}\oplus Q^2H_{r-4}\oplus \cdots.

d) Show that the representation HrH_r is irreducible (cf. Chap. VIII, §13, no. 3, (IV)).

e) Take k=Ck=\mathbf{C}, and V=CnV =\mathbf{C}^n equipped with the usual quadratic form (n≥3)(n\geq 3). We thus obtain irreducible representations τr\tau_r of SO(n,R)\mathbf{S}\mathbf{O}(n,\mathbf{R}); with the notations of Exerc. 2 of §4, show that the highest weight of τr\tau_r is rϖ1r\varpi_1.

f) Let Γ\Gamma be the Casimir element of G obtained from the Killing form. Prove the formula ΓS(V)\Gamma_{\mathbf{S}(V)} = 12n−4(−4QΔ+(H+n2I)((H+(2−n2)I))\frac{1}{2n-4}(-4Q\Delta +(H +\frac{n}{2}I)((H +(2-\frac{n}{2})I)). Calculate Γ~(τr)\widetilde{\Gamma}(\tau_r) and deduce the value of the form QΓQ_{\Gamma} (Prop. 4).
