Choose a separating positive quadratic form Q on g\mathfrak{g} invariant under Ad(G). For x∈tx\in \mathfrak{t}, put ϑ0(x)=∑u∈Γ(T)e−Q(x+u)\vartheta_0(x) =\sum_{u\in\Gamma(T)}e^{-Q(x+u)}.

a) Show that ϑ0\vartheta_0 is a function of class C∞C^{\infty} on t\mathfrak{t}, and that there exists a function ϑ1\vartheta_1 of class C∞C^{\infty} on T such that ϑ1∘\vartheta_1\circ expT=ϑ0_T=\vartheta_0. b) Show that there exists a unique central function ϑ\vartheta on G, of class C∞C^{\infty}, whose restriction to T is equal to ϑ1\vartheta_1. For every maximal torus S of G and all x∈L(S)x\in L(S), we have

ϑ\vartheta(exp xx) =∑u∈Γ(S)e−Q(x+u)=\sum_{u\in\Gamma(S)}e^{-Q(x+u)}.

c) Let A be an alcove of t,dx\mathfrak{t},dx a Haar measure on t\mathfrak{t}, and hh a locally integrable function on t\mathfrak{t} invariant under the affine Weyl group Wa′(W_a'(§5, no. 2). Prove the equality

∫Ah(x)dx=1w(G)∫th(x)e−Q(x)(ϑ0(x))−1dx. \int_Ah(x)dx=\frac{1}{w(\mathrm{G})}\int_{\mathfrak{t}}h(x)e^{-Q(x)}(\vartheta_0(x))^{-1}dx.

d) For x∈gx\in \mathfrak{g}, put ξ(x)=λg(x)e−Q(x)(ϑ\xi (x) =\lambda_{\mathfrak{g}}(x)e^{-Q(x)}(\vartheta(exp xx))−1^{-1}, with λg(x)=\lambda_{\mathfrak{g}}(x) = detead x−1ad x\frac{e^{\mathrm{ad}\ x}-1}{\mathrm{ad}\ x} (§6, no. 3). Show that ξ\xi is a function of class C∞C^{\infty} on g\mathfrak{g} and that if μ\mu is a Haar measure on g\mathfrak{g}, the image under expG_G of the measure ξμ\xi \mu is a Haar measure on G (use cc) as well as Cor. 2 of Th. 1 and Prop. 4 (§6, no. 2 and 3)).

e) Prove the formula ϑ0(x)=m∑λ∈X(T)\vartheta_0(x) =m\sum_{\lambda\in X(T)} exp(δ(λ)(x)−41Q′(δ(λ))\delta (\lambda )(x)-^1_4Q'(\delta (\lambda ))) for x∈tx\in \mathfrak{t}, where Q′Q' is the quadratic form on tC∗\mathfrak{t}^*_{\mathbf{C}} inverse to the quadratic form on tC\mathfrak{t}_{\mathbf{C}} induced by Q and where mm is a constant that should be calculated (use Poisson’s formula, cf. Spectral Theory, Chap. II, §1, no. 8). Deduce the equality ϑ(t)=m∑λ∈X(T)e−Q′(δ(λ))/4tλ\vartheta (t) =m\sum_{\lambda\in X(T)}e^{-Q'(\delta(\lambda))/4}t^{\lambda} for t∈Tt\in T.
