Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IX, § 9. Compact Lie groups operating on manifolds
Assume that X is paracompact. There exists a real Hilbert space E, a continuous unitary representation of G on E and an embedding of class such that for all and all .
The space is locally compact (General Topology, Chap. III, §4, no. 5, Prop. 11). Its connected components are the images of the connected components of X, which are countable at infinity (General Topology, Chap. I, §9, no. 10, Th. 5); thus, they are themselves countable at infinity, which implies that is paracompact (loc. cit.). Hence, there exists a locally finite covering of by relatively compact open sets, and a covering such that for all General Topology, Chap. IX, §4, no. 3, Cor. 1 of Th. 3); taking the inverse image, we obtain two locally finite coverings and of X by relatively compact open sets stable under G, such that for all .
For all , there exists a representation of G on a finite dimensional real vector space and a morphism , compatible with the operations of G, whose restriction to is an embedding (Th. 1). For , let be a numerical function of class on X, equal to 1 on and to 0 outside Differentiable and Analytic Manifolds, Results, 5.3.6). Put for . The function is of class , invariant under G (§6, no. 4, Cor. 2), equal to 1 on and to 0 outside . Give each a Hilbert scalar product invariant under G (§1, no. 1), and its canonical Hilbert structure; let E be the Hilbert sum of the family , and let be the representation of G on E induced by the and the trivial action of G on . For , put . Then is a morphism of class from X to E, compatible with the operations of G; we verify as in the proof of Prop. 4 (no. 1) that is an embedding, which implies the corollary.
That is (Spectral Theory, in preparation) a continuous linear representation (Integration, Chap. VIII, §2, no. 1) such that the operator is unitary for all
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
