Theory of Sets, III, 225

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

An ordinal is the order-type of a well-ordered set (Exercise 13).

(a) Show that, if (λι)ι∈I(\lambda_\iota)_{\iota \in I} is a family of ordinals indexed by a well-ordered set II, then the ordinal sum ∑ι∈Iλι\sum_{\iota \in I} \lambda_\iota is an ordinal; \* and that if, moreover, II is finite, the ordinal product Pι∈Iλι\mathbf{P}_{\iota \in I} \lambda_\iota is an ordinal (Exercise 11). \* The order-type of the empty set is denoted by 0, and that of a set with one element by 1 (by abuse of language, cf. § 3). Show that

α+0=0+α=αandα.1=1.α=α\alpha + 0 = 0 + \alpha = \alpha \qquad \text{and} \qquad \alpha . 1 = 1 . \alpha = \alpha

for every ordinal α\alpha.

(b) Show that the relation "λ\lambda is an ordinal and μ\mu is an ordinal and λ≺μ\lambda \prec \mu" is a well-ordering relation, denoted by λ⩽μ\lambda \leqslant \mu. (Note that, if λ\lambda and μ\mu are ordinals, the relation λ≺μ\lambda \prec \mu is equivalent to "λ\lambda is equal to the order-type of a segment of μ\mu" (no. 5, Theorem 3, Corollary 3): given a family (λι)ι∈I(\lambda_\iota)_{\iota \in I} of ordinals, consider a well-ordering on II and take the ordinal sum of the family of sets ordered by the λι\lambda_\iota; finally, use Proposition 2 of no. 1.)

(c) Let α\alpha be an ordinal. Show that the relation "ξ\xi is an ordinal and ξ⩽α\xi \leqslant \alpha" is collectivizing in ξ\xi, and that the set OαO_\alpha of ordinals <α< \alpha is a well-ordered set such that Ord (Oα)=α\mathrm{Ord}\,(O_\alpha) = \alpha. We shall often identify OαO_\alpha with α\alpha.

(d) Show that for every family of ordinals (ξι)ι∈I(\xi_\iota)_{\iota \in I} there exists a unique ordinal α\alpha such that the relation "λ\lambda is an ordinal and ξι⩽λ\xi_\iota \leqslant \lambda for all ι∈I\iota \in I" is equivalent to α⩽λ\alpha \leqslant \lambda. By abuse of language, α\alpha is called the least upper bound of the family of ordinals (ξι)ι∈I(\xi_\iota)_{\iota \in I}, and we write α=sup⁡ι∈Iξι\alpha = \sup_{\iota \in I} \xi_\iota (it is the greatest element of the union of {α}\{\alpha\} and the set of the ξι\xi_\iota). The least upper bound of the set of ordinals ξ<α\xi < \alpha is either α\alpha or an ordinal β\beta such that α=β+1\alpha = \beta + 1; in the latter case, β\beta is said to be the predecessor of α\alpha.
