Algebra, chapter II, § 6. Inverse and direct limits of modules

(1) Proposition 1 and its proof are valid for arbitrary groups, except for change of notation.

(2) Note that if there are exact sequences

0⟶Eα′→uαEα→vαEα′′⟶0 0 \longrightarrow E'_\alpha \xrightarrow{u_\alpha} E_\alpha \xrightarrow{v_\alpha} E''_\alpha \longrightarrow 0

it does not necessarily follow that the sequence

0⟶lim⁡Eα′→ulim⁡Eα→vlim⁡Eα′′⟶0 0 \longrightarrow \lim E'_\alpha \xrightarrow{u} \lim E_\alpha \xrightarrow{v} \lim E''_\alpha \longrightarrow 0

is exact; in other words, the inverse limit of an inverse system of surjective linear mappings is not necessarily surjective (cf. Exercise 1).

Suppose now that the AαA_\alpha are equal to the same ring AA and the ϕαβ\phi_{\alpha\beta} to 1A1_A; then for every inverse system (Eα,fαβ)(E_\alpha, f_{\alpha\beta}) of AA-modules, E=lim⁡EαE = \lim E_\alpha is an AA-module. Let FF be an AA-module and, for all α\alpha, let uα:F→Eαu_\alpha : F \to E_\alpha be an AA-linear mapping such that (uα)(u_\alpha) is an inverse system of mappings; then u=lim⁡uαu = \lim u_\alpha is an AA-linear mapping of FF into lim⁡Eα\lim E_\alpha. Conversely, for every AA-linear mapping v:F→lim⁡Eαv : F \to \lim E_\alpha, the family of vα=fα∘vv_\alpha = f_\alpha \circ v is an inverse system of AA-linear mappings such that v=lim⁡←vαv = \lim_{\leftarrow} v_\alpha. We note on the other hand that for α≤β\alpha \leq \beta the mapping

Hom⁡(1F,fαβ)=fˉαβ:Hom⁡A(F,Eβ)→Hom⁡A(F,Eα) \operatorname{Hom}(1_F, f_{\alpha \beta}) = \bar{f}_{\alpha \beta}: \operatorname{Hom}_A(F, E_\beta) \to \operatorname{Hom}_A(F, E_\alpha)

is a Z\mathbf{Z}-module homomorphism such that (Hom⁡A(F,Eα),fˉαβ)(\operatorname{Hom}_A(F, E_\alpha), \bar{f}_{\alpha \beta}) is an inverse system of Z\mathbf{Z}-modules; as fˉαβ(vβ)=fαβ∘vβ\bar{f}_{\alpha \beta}(v_\beta) = f_{\alpha \beta} \circ v_\beta, the above remarks can therefore be expressed as follows:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
