Algebra, chapter II, § 7. Vector spaces

For a family (ai)i∈I(a_i)_{i \in I} of elements of a vector space EE over a field KK to be free, it is necessary and sufficient that, for all κ∈I\kappa \in I, aκa_\kappa belong to no subspace of EE generated by the aia_i of index i≠κi \neq \kappa. We know that this condition is necessary in any module (§ 1, no. 11, Remark 1). It is sufficient by virtue of Lemma 1, as is seen immediately arguing by reductio ad absurdum and considering a minimal related subfamily of (ai)(a_i).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
