Algebra, chapter II, § 7. Vector spaces

*Let E,FE, F be two vector spaces over a field KK. For every linear mapping uu of EE into FF, the dimension of the subspace u(E)u(E) of FF is called the rank of uu and denoted by rg(u)\mathrm{rg}(u).

If N=Ker(u)N = \mathrm{Ker}(u), E/NE/N is isomorphic to u(E)u(E), whence the relation

rg(u)=codimE(Ker(u)) \mathrm{rg}(u) = \mathrm{codim}_E(\mathrm{Ker}(u))
and therefore
rg(u)+dim⁡(Ker(u))=dim⁡E. \mathrm{rg}(u) + \dim(\mathrm{Ker}(u)) = \dim E.
Moreover, by formula (3)
rg(u)+dim⁡(Coker(u))=dim⁡F. \mathrm{rg}(u) + \dim(\mathrm{Coker}(u)) = \dim F.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
