Algebra, chapter IV, § 6. Symmetric functions

— The field of symmetric rational fractions in X1,…,XnX_1, \ldots, X_n is the field of fractions of the ring of symmetric polynomials in X1,…,XnX_1, \ldots, X_n..

Let f∈K(X1,…,Xn)f \in K(X_1, \ldots, X_n) be a symmetric rational fraction, and let u1,v1u_1, v_1 be two elements of K[X1,…,Xn]K[X_1, \ldots, X_n] such that f=u1v1f = \frac{u_1}{v_1}. We put v=∏σ∈Snψσ(v1)∈K[X1,…,Xn]v = \prod_{\sigma \in S_n} \psi_\sigma(v_1) \in K[X_1, \ldots, X_n] and u=fv∈K[X1,…,Xn]u = fv \in K[X_1, \ldots, X_n]; then vv is symmetric, hence uu is symmetric, because ff is, and f=uvf = \frac{u}{v}, whence the result.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
