Algebra, chapter IV, § 6. Symmetric functions

Let J be a finite subset of I, r an integer such that Card J≥rJ \geq r and fa symmetric formal power series which is homogeneous of degree r in the XiX_i (i∈Ii \in I). Let fˉ\bar{f} be the formal power series obtained by substituting 0 for XiX_i for each i in I−JI - J. If fˉ=0\bar{f} = 0, then we have f=0f = 0.

Let us put f=∑∣α∣=raαXαf = \sum_{|\alpha| = r} a_\alpha X^\alpha (where ∣α∣|\alpha| is the length ∑i∈Iαi\sum_{i \in I} \alpha_i of the multiindex a=(αi)i∈Ia = (\alpha_i)_{i \in I}). If aa is a multiindex of length rr, and J′J' is the support of aa (the set of i∈Ii \in I such that αi≠0\alpha_i \neq 0), then Card J′≤rJ' \leq r, hence there exists a permutation σ∈SI\sigma \in S_I such that σ(J′)⊂J\sigma(J') \subset J. Put βi=ασ−1(i)\beta_i = \alpha_{\sigma^{-1}(i)} for i∈Ii \in I, then the monomial Xβ=∏i∈IXσ(i)αiX^\beta = \prod_{i \in I} X_{\sigma(i)}^{\alpha_i} depends only on the indeterminates XjX_j (j∈Jj \in J), whence aβ=0a_\beta = 0 by the hypothesis f‾=0\overline{f} = 0. Since ff is symmetric, we have aα=aβa_\alpha = a_\beta and since α\alpha was arbitrary, we conclude that f=0f = 0.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
