Algebra, chapter IV, § 6. Symmetric functions

Let ff be a symmetric formal power series of degree rr in the Xi(i∈I)X_i (i \in I). There exists a unique polynomial P∈B∩A[S]P \in B \cap A[S], isobaric of weight rr, such that f=ψ1(P)f = \psi_1(P).

The case when II is finite follows from Th. 1 (IV, p. 62).

Assume that II is infinite and choose a finite subset JJ of II, containing rr elements. We keep the notation of Lemma 1; we remark that every isobaric polynomial of weight rr in the Sn (n≥1)S_n \ (n \geq 1) depends only on S1,…,SrS_1, \ldots, S_r and that s‾1,…,s‾r\overline{s}_1, \ldots, \overline{s}_r are the elementary symmetric polynomials in the rr indeterminates Xj (j∈J)X_j \ (j \in J). If PP is an isobaric polynomial of weight rr in the SnS_n and h=f−ψ1(P)h = f - \psi_1(P), then h‾=f‾−P(s‾1,…,Sr)\overline{h} = \overline{f} - P(\overline{s}_1, \ldots, S_r) and Lemma 1 shows the relation f=ψ1(P)f = \psi_1(P) to be equivalent to f‾=P(s‾1,…,s‾r)\overline{f} = P(\overline{s}_1, \ldots, \overline{s}_r). By Th. 1 (IV, p. 62) there exists a unique polynomial P∈A[S]P \in A[S], isobaric of weight rr and such that f‾=P(s‾1,…,s‾r)\overline{f} = P(\overline{s}_1, \ldots, \overline{s}_r), whence the result.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
