Algebra, chapter V, § 9. Conjugate elements and quasi-Galois extensions

— Let x and y be two elements of Ω\Omega. Then the following conditions are equivalent:

a) x and y are conjugate over K.

b) There exists a K-isomorphism o of K(x)K(x) onto K(y)K(y) such that v(x)=yv(x) = y.

c) x and y have the same minimal polynomial over K.

Suppose first that x and y are conjugate over K; let u be a K-automorphism of Ω\Omega such that u(x)=yu(x) = y and let f be the minimal polynomial of x over K. We have

f(y)=f(u(x))=u(f(x))=0, f(y) = f(u(x)) = u(f(x)) = 0,

and ff is a monic irreducible polynomial in K[X]\mathbf{K}[X]; therefore (VV, p. 16, Th. 1, c)), ff is the minimal polynomial of yy over KK. Thus a) implies c).

Suppose now that xx and yy have the same minimal polynomial ff over KK. There exists a KK-isomorphism of the field K[X]/(f)\mathbf{K}[X]/(f) onto K(x)\mathbf{K}(x) (resp. onto K(y)\mathbf{K}(y)) mapping the residue class of XX modulo (f)(f) to xx (resp. yy) (VV, p. 16, Th. 1, b)); hence there exists a KK-isomorphism vv of K(x)\mathbf{K}(x) onto K(y)\mathbf{K}(y) such that v(x)=yv(x) = y. Therefore c) implies b).

Finally, under the hypothesis b), Prop. 1 implies the existence of a KK-automorphism uu of Ω\Omega extending vv; we then have u(x)=yu(x) = y, hence xx and yy are conjugate over KK, so b) implies a).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
