Algebra, chapter V, § 16. Differential criteria of separability
— Let be a field, a separable algebraic extension of and a vector space over .
a) Every -derivation of into is zero.
b) If is a derivation of into , there exists a unique derivation of into which extends .
Let be a -derivation of into . If is a subextension of of finite degree over , then the -algebra is etale, and so (, p. 33, Th. 3), whence by the universal property of (III, p. 569). Since is the union of a family of subextensions of finite degree over , we have , whence a).
Let be a derivation of into . If and are two extensions of to a derivation of into , then the difference is a -derivation of into ; hence it is zero by a) and so .
It remains to prove the existence of an extension of . Zorn's Lemma (E, III, p. 20) implies the existence of a maximal extension of to a derivation defined on a subfield of containing .
Let be in and the minimal polynomial of over . Since is algebraic and separable over , is algebraic and separable over (, p. 39, Prop. 6 and p. 39, Cor. 2); therefore is a simple root of (, p. 39, Prop. 5), whence (IV, p. 17, Prop. 7). If we define as in , p. 127, there exists thus an element of such that ; by Prop. 1 (V, p. 127) there exists a derivation of into extending and such that . In view of the maximal character of we thus have , whence . Since was arbitrary we conclude that .
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
