Algebra, chapter V, § 16. Differential criteria of separability

— Let E be a subextension of L and U the vector sub-L-space of ΩK(L)\Omega_K(L) generated by the differentials of elements of E. For an element x to be algebraic over E it is necessary and sufficient that dx∈Udx \in U.

For each y∈Ly \in L let D(y) be the residue class of dydy mod U. Then D is an E-derivation of L into ΩK(L)/U\Omega_K(L)/U. Since K is of characteristic 0, every algebraic extension of E is separable (V, p. 37, Cor.) ; if x∈Lx \in L is algebraic over E, we have Dx=0Dx = 0 by Prop. 4 (V, p. 129), that is, dx∈Udx \in U.

If x∈Lx \in L is transcendental over EE, there exists an E-derivation AA of E(x)E(x) into LL such that Δ(x)=1\Delta(x) = 1 (VV, p. 128, Prop. 3); by Th. 1, AA extends to an E-derivation D of LL into L. Let φ\varphi be the linear form on ΩK(L)\Omega_K(L) such that D=φ∘dD = \varphi \circ d; we have φ(dy)=0\varphi(dy) = 0 for y∈Ey \in E and φ(x)=1\varphi(x) = 1, whence dx∉Udx \notin U.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
