Topological Vector Spaces, I, p. 14, § 2. Linear varieties in a topological vector space

Let EE be a topological vector space over a complete non-discrete valued division ring. If MM is a closed vector subspace of EE and FF is a vector subspace of EE of finite dimension, then the subspace M+FM + F is closed in EE. Write ϕ\phi for the canonical homomorphism of EE on the quotient space E/ME/M (necessarily Hausdorff). Then the subspace M+FM + F is identical with ϕ‾−1(ϕ(F))\overline{\phi}^{-1}(\phi(F)). Now ϕ(F)\phi(F) is of finite dimension in E/ME/M, therefore (cor. 1) ϕ(F)\phi(F) is closed in E/ME/M, and, in consequence, ϕ‾−1(ϕ(F))\overline{\phi}^{-1}(\phi(F)) is closed in EE.

We note that, if MM and NN are any two closed vector subspaces in a Hausdorff topological vector space EE, then M+NM + N is not necessarily closed in EE, \* even if EE is a Hilbert space \* (cf. IV, p. 64, exerc. 13, d)).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
