Topological Vector Spaces, V, p. 18, § 2. Orthogonal families in a hilbertian space

Let (Ei)i∈I(E_i)_{i \in I} be a family of hilbertian spaces. The hilbertian space E defined in prop. 1 is called the external hilbertian sum of the family (Ei)i∈I(E_i)_{i \in I} and written as ⨁i∈IEi\bigoplus_{i \in I} E_i or ⨁i∈IEi\bigoplus_{i \in I} E_i^1.

Let fif_i be the mapping from EiE_i into E which transforms z∈Eiz \in E_i into an element (xk)∈E(x_k) \in E such that xk=0x_k = 0 for all k≠ik \neq i and xi=zx_i = z; it is clear that fif_i is an isomorphism from the hilbertian space EiE_i onto a closed vector subspace of E. We say that fif_i is the canonical mapping from EiE_i into E and we shall generally identify EiE_i with its image in E by this isomorphism. With this convention, EiE_i and EkE_k are orthogonal in E for i≠ki \neq k, and E is the closed vector subspace generated by the union of the subspaces EiE_i.

When I is finite, E is the direct sum of the EiE_i; since the canonical projector from E onto EiE_i is continuous for all i∈Ii \in I, E is also the topological direct sum of the EiE_i (GT, III, § 6, No. 2, prop. 2). If I={1,n}I = \{1, n\}, we also write E1⊕E2⊕...⊕EnE_1 \oplus E_2 \oplus ... \oplus E_n instead of ⨁i=1nEi\bigoplus_{i=1}^n E_i.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
