Integration, VII, p. 54, § 3. Applications and examples

Let F be a Hilbert space, K a compact group, and s ↦ U(s) a representation of K in the group of invertible elements of L(F;F)\mathscr{L}(F; F), continuous for the topology of pointwise convergence. There exists a nondegenerate positive hermitian form φ\varphi on F such that

φ(U(s)x,U(s)y)=φ(x,y) \varphi(U(s)x, U(s)y) = \varphi(x, y)

for all s∈K,x∈F,y∈Fs \in K, x \in F, y \in F, and such that the topological vector space structure of F defined by φ\varphi (TVS, V, §1, No. 3) is identical to the original structure of F.

Let α\alpha be a Haar measure on K. For any x,yx, y in F, the mapping s↦(U(s)x∣U(s)y)s \mapsto (U(s)x|U(s)y) is continuous. Set

φ(x,y)=∫(U(s)x∣U(s)y) dα(s). \varphi(x, y) = \int (U(s)x|U(s)y)\, d\alpha(s).

It is immediate that φ(x,y)\varphi(x, y) is a sesquilinear form on F. Since the set of endomorphisms U(s)U(s) is compact in Ls(F;F)\mathscr{L}_s(F; F), there exists a constant M such that ∥U(s)∥≤M\|U(s)\| \leq M for all s∈Ks \in K. For every x∈Fx \in F, we therefore have

M−1∥x∥≤∥U(s)x∥≤M∥x∥, M^{-1}\|x\| \leq \|U(s)x\| \leq M\|x\|,

whence the inequalities

M−2α(K)∥x∥2≤φ(x,x)≤M2α(K)∥x∥2, M^{-2}\alpha(K)\|x\|^2 \leq \varphi(x, x) \leq M^2\alpha(K)\|x\|^2,

which shows that φ\varphi is positive and nondegenerate, and that the norm φ(x,x)1/2\varphi(x, x)^{1/2} is equivalent to the norm ∥x∥\|x\|. Finally, for all t∈Kt \in K,

φ(U(t)x,U(t)y)=∫(U(st)x∣U(st)y) dα(s)=∫(U(s)x∣U(s)y) dα(s)=φ(x,y). \begin{align*} \varphi(U(t)x, U(t)y) &= \int (U(st)x|U(st)y)\, d\alpha(s) \\ &= \int (U(s)x|U(s)y)\, d\alpha(s) = \varphi(x, y). \end{align*}

When the field of scalars is H\mathbf{H}, one argues exactly as before on replacing everywhere the function s↦(U(s)x∣U(s)y)s \mapsto (U(s)x|U(s)y) by the function s↦Φ(sx,sy)s \mapsto \Phi(sx, sy) defined on G, with values in H\mathbf{H}. This completes the proof of the proposition.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
