Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter V, § 3. Groups of displacements generated by reflections
Let be a non-empty subset of , let be the set of hyperplanes containing , let be the intersection of the , and let be a facet of open in (§ 1, no. 3, Prop. 7). Then , and is generated by the reflections with respect to the hyperplanes in .
We first prove the following assertion:
(I) Let be a chamber, let and be two points of and let be such that . Then and belongs to the subgroup , where is the set of walls of containing .
We argue by induction on the length of (relative to the set of reflections with respect to the walls of ), the case being obvious. If , there exist a wall of and an element such that and . Since , the chambers and are on opposite sides of by Th. 1 of no. 2. Thus, , so . Thus and the induction hypothesis implies that and . Since , it follows that , and hence that , completing the proof of (I).
Proof of Theorem 2: this follows from (I) and Lemma 2.
Proof of Proposition 1: we know that two distinct facets are disjoint and have distinct closures (§ 1, no. 2, Cor. of Prop. 3). The equivalence of (i), (ii) and (iii) follows. On the other hand, it is clear that
and assertion (I) shows that (i) (vii).
Proof of Proposition 2: let be the affine subspace of generated by . Clearly, . By Prop. 7 of § 1, no. 3, there exists a point that does not belong to any hyperplane . Let be the facet containing : it is open in and Prop. 1 shows that
hence . Replacing by , we also have
hence the proposition.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
