Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter V, § 3. Groups of displacements generated by reflections

There exists a special point for WW.

By Prop. 6 of no. 8, we need only consider the case when WW is essential.

The group U(W)U(W) of automorphisms of TT is finite (cf. no. 6, Th. 3) and U(sH)U(s_H) is an orthogonal reflection for every hyperplane HH; moreover, U(W)U(W) is generated by the family (U(sH))H∈H(U(s_H))_{H \in \mathfrak{H}}. By Prop. 7 of no. 9, there exists a basis (ei)i∈I(e_i)_{i \in I} of TT such that the group U(W)U(W) is generated by the set of reflections (si)i∈I(s_i)_{i \in I} defined by

si(t)=t−2(t∣ei)ei. s_i(t) = t - 2(t|e_i) e_i.
The Cor. of Th. 1 of no. 2 shows that every reflection s∈U(W)s \in U(W) is of the form s=U(sH)s = U(s_H) with H∈HH \in \mathfrak{H}. We can thus find in H\mathfrak{H} a family of hyperplanes (Hi)i∈I(H_i)_{i \in I} such that si=U(sHi)s_i = U(s_{H_i}) for all ii. Since the vectors eie_i are linearly independent, there exists a∈Ea \in E such that a∈Hia \in H_i for all i∈Ii \in I. We have sHi∈Was_{H_i} \in W_a, so U(W)=U(Wa)U(W) = U(W_a), which means that W=Wa.LW = W_a . L since LL is the kernel of UU. Thus, aa is special.

When WW is finite and essential, there is only one special point for WW, namely the unique point invariant under WW. Thus, the consideration of special points is interesting mainly when WW is infinite.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
