Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter V, § 3. Groups of displacements generated by reflections

Let C be a chamber and let i,j∈Ii, j \in I with i≠ji \neq j. Put si=si(C),Hi=Hi(C),ei=ei(C)s_i = s_i(C), H_i = H_i(C), e_i = e_i(C) and define sj,Hjs_j, H_j and eje_j similarly.

(i) If HiH_i and HjH_j are parallel, then mij=∞m_{ij} = \infty and ei=−eje_i = -e_j.

(ii) If HiH_i and HjH_j are not parallel, then mijm_{ij} is finite and

(ei∣ej)=−cos⁡(π/mij). (e_i|e_j) = -\cos(\pi/m_{ij}).

(iii) We have (ei∣ej)≤0(e_i|e_j) \leq 0.

If HiH_i and HjH_j are parallel, sisjs_i s_j is a translation (§ 2, no. 4, Prop. 5), so mij=∞m_{ij} = \infty. Moreover, either ei=eje_i = e_j or ei=−eje_i = -e_j. Now, there exists a point aa (resp. a′a') in the closure of C that belongs to HiH_i (resp. HjH_j) but not to HjH_j (resp. HiH_i). Then (a′−a∣ei)>0(a' - a|e_i) > 0 and (a−a′∣ej)>0(a - a'|e_j) > 0, which excludes the case ei=eje_i = e_j and proves (i).

Assume now that HiH_i and HjH_j are not parallel. Choose an origin a∈Hi∩Hja \in H_i \cap H_j and identify T with E by the bijection t↦a+tt \mapsto a + t. Let V be the plane orthogonal to Hi∩HjH_i \cap H_j and passing through aa. Put Γ=V∩DHi(C)∩DHj(C)\Gamma = V \cap D_{H_i}(C) \cap D_{H_j}(C) (where DH(C)D_H(C) denotes the open half-space bounded by H and containing C (§1§ 1, no. 1)) and let D (resp. D′D') be the half-line in V contained in Hi∩VH_i \cap V (resp. Hj∩VH_j \cap V) and in the closure of Γ\Gamma. For a suitable orientation of V, the set Γ\Gamma is the union of the open half-lines Δ\Delta in V such that

0<(D^,Δ^)<(D^,D′^). 0 < (\widehat{D}, \widehat{\Delta}) < (\widehat{D}, \widehat{D'}).
Let W′W' be the subgroup of W generated by sis_i and sjs_j. For any w∈W′w \in W', the hyperplanes w(Hi)w(H_i) and w(Hj)w(H_j) belong to H\mathscr{H}, contain Hi∩HjH_i \cap H_j and do not meet C. It follows that they do not meet Γ\Gamma (§1§ 1, no. 5, Prop. 10). The Cor. of Prop. 7 of §2§ 2, no. 5 thus implies (ii).

Finally, assertion (iii) follows immediately from (i) and (ii), since mij≥2m_{ij} \geq 2 for i≠ji \neq j.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
