Let(Xα,fαβ)be an inverse system of topological spaces indexed by a directed set, such that for each pair of indicesα,βfor whichα≤βand for eachxα∈Xα, fαβ−1(xα)is compact. Then equation (1) is valid andfα−1(xα)is compact for each indexαand eachxα∈Xα.
For each xα∈⋂β≥αfαβ(Xβ) and each β≥α, let Lβ denote fαβ−1(xα). If α≤β≤γ, then we have fβγ(Lγ)⊂Lβ and the set of all indices β≥α is cofinal in the index set. It follows immediately that the Lβ (β≥α) form an inverse system of topological spaces (with the restrictions of the fβγ as mappings), whose inverse limit L is homeomorphic to fα−1(xα). Since by hypothesis the Lβ are compact and not empty, the corollary follows from Proposition 8.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
