General Topology, chapter III, § 7. Inverse limits of topological groups and rings

Let (Gα,fαβ)(G_\alpha, f_{\alpha\beta}) be an inverse system of Hausdorff topological groups such that the fαβf_{\alpha\beta} are surjective strict morphisms with compact kernels. Then for each α∈I\alpha \in I the canonical mapping fαf_\alpha of G=lim←⁡GαG = \varprojlim G_\alpha into GαG_\alpha is a surjective strict morphism whose kernel is compact.

The facts that fαf_\alpha is surjective and that its kernel is compact are consequences of Chapter I, § 9, no. 6, Corollary 1 to Proposition 8. It remains to show that fαf_\alpha is a strict morphism. Let ee (resp. eαe_\alpha) denote the identity element of GG (resp. GαG_\alpha). Each neighbourhood VV of ee in GG contains a set of the form fβ−1(Vβ)f_\beta^{-1}(V_\beta), where VβV_\beta is a neighbourhood of eβe_\beta in GβG_\beta, and we may suppose that β≥α\beta \geq \alpha; since fαβf_{\alpha \beta} is a surjective strict morphism, fαβ(Vβ)f_{\alpha \beta}(V_\beta) is a neighbourhood of eαe_\alpha in GαG_\alpha, and since fβf_\beta is surjective, we have Vβ⊂fβ(V)V_\beta \subset f_\beta(V), whence

fα(V)=fαβ(fβ(V))⊃fαβ(Vβ); f_\alpha(V) = f_{\alpha \beta}(f_\beta(V)) \supset f_{\alpha \beta}(V_\beta);

this shows that fα(V)f_\alpha(V) is a neighbourhood of eαe_\alpha in GαG_\alpha.

If Hα=fα−1(eα)H_\alpha = f_\alpha^{-1}(e_\alpha), then each HαH_\alpha is a compact normal subgroup of GG; the HαH_\alpha clearly satisfy the condition (AP) of no. 3; and GαG_\alpha can be identified with G/HαG/H_\alpha. In particular Propositions 3 and 4 of no. 3 apply to GG and the HαH_\alpha.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
