General Topology, chapter I, § 11. Connectedness

The union of a family of connected sets whose intersection is non-empty is connected.

Let (Ai)i∈I(A_i)_{i \in I} be a family of connected subsets of XX, all of which contain the same point xx; we have to show that

A=⋃iAi A = \bigcup_i A_i

is connected. If not, there are two open sets BB and CC such that B∩AB \cap A and C∩AC \cap A are non-empty, and A⊂B∪CA \subset B \cup C and A∩B∩C=∅A \cap B \cap C = \emptyset. xx belongs to one of the sets B,CB, C, say x∈Bx \in B; on the other hand one of the sets AiA_i, say AxA_x, meets CC; we have therefore Ax⊂B∪CA_x \subset B \cup C, Ax∩B∩C=∅A_x \cap B \cap C = \emptyset and B∩AxB \cap A_x and C∩AxC \cap A_x are non-empty. Hence AxA_x is not connected, which is a contradiction.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
