General Topology, chapter IV, § 6. Continuous and semi-continuous real-valued functions

Let ff be a lower semi-continuous function on a non-empty quasi-compact space XX. Then there is at least one point a∈Ea \in E such that f(a)=inf⁡x∈Xf(x)f(a) = \inf_{x \in X} f(x) (in other words, ff attains its greatest lower bound in XX).

For each k∈f(X)k \in f(X), consider the set Ak=f‾([−∞,k])A_k = \overline{f}([-\infty, k]). These sets are non-empty and form a filter base on XX; since they are closed by Proposition 1, they have at least one common point aa [axiom (C'') for quasi-compact spaces]. For each x∈Xx \in X we have therefore f(a)≤f(x)f(a) \leq f(x), and the theorem follows.

(*) We recall (Set Theory, Chapter III, § 5, no. 5) that the characteristic function φA\varphi_A of a subset AA of a set XX is the function defined on XX such that φA(x)=1\varphi_A(x) = 1 for all x∈Ax \in A, and φA(x)=0\varphi_A(x) = 0 for all x∈∁Ax \in \complement_A.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
