General Topology, chapter VI, § 3. Real projective spaces
If , the projective space is homeomorphic to the quotient space of the ball obtained by identifying each point of with its diametrically opposite point.
Let be the closed hemisphere of defined by . , which is homeomorphic to the quotient space of by the relation , is also homeomorphic to the quotient of the subset of by the relation induced on by . For every equivalence class of meets in at least one point, and therefore (Lemma 1) it is enough to verify that if we saturate with respect to an open subset of which is saturated with respect to , we get an open subset of . Now if and if , there is a neighbourhood of in contained in , and the union of and is a neighbourhood of saturated with respect to and contained in . If on the other hand , we have , and there exists such that the set of points which satisfy one or the other of the relations ||x - a|| < r, ||x + a|| < r is contained in U; the set of points x \in S_n which satisfy one or the other of these relations is the neighbourhood of a which is saturated with respect to and is contained in V.
Observe that the quotient space is obtained by identifying, in H, each point of the intersection of H and the hyperplane with its opposite point. To complete the proof it suffices to remark that the stereographic projection with vertex ( 2, no. 4) is a homeomorphism of H onto which leaves invariant the points of .
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
