General Topology, chapter IX, § 3. Metrizable groups, valued fields, normed spaces and algebras

The left and right uniformities of a topological group GG are metrizable if and only if GG is Hausdorff and the identity element ee of GG has a countable fundamental system of neighbourhoods.

The condition is clearly necessary. Conversely, if it is satisfied, let (Vn)(V_n) be a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of ee; if UnU_n denotes the set of pairs (x,y)∈G×G(x, y) \in G \times G such that x−1y∈Vnx^{-1}y \in V_n, then the UnU_n form a countable fundamental system of entourages of the left uniformity of GG; since this uniformity is Hausdorff, it follows from § 2, no. 4, Theorem 1 that it is metrizable. Similarly for the right uniformity of GG.

A topological group GG is said to be metrizable if its topology is metrizable. Proposition 1 then shows that its two uniformities are metrizable.

This result can be sharpened with the help of the following notion:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
