Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 1. The Lie algebra sl(2, k) and its representations

Let E be a finite dimensional sl(2,k)\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2, k)-module.

(i) The endomorphism HEH_E is diagonalizable and its eigenvalues are rational integers.

(ii) For any p∈Zp\in \mathbf{Z}, let EpE_p be the eigenspace of HEH_E corresponding to the eigenvalue pp. Let ii be an integer ≥0\geq 0. The map X−Ei∣Ep:Ep→Ep−2iX_{-E}^i|E_p: E_p\rightarrow E_{p-2i} is injective for i≤pi\leq p, bijective for i=pi=p, and surjective for i≥pi\geq p. The map X+Ei∣E−p:E−p→E−p+2iX_{+E}^i|E_{-p}: E_{-p}\rightarrow E_{-p+2i} is injective for i≤pi\leq p, bijective for i=pi=p, and surjective for i≥pi\geq p.

(iii) The length of E is equal to dim KerX+EX_{+E} and to dim KerX−EX_{-E}.

(iv) Let E′E' (resp. E′′E'') be the sum of the EpE_p for pp even (resp. odd). Then E′E' (resp. E′′E'') is the sum of the simple submodules of E of odd (resp. even) dimension; and E=E′⊕E′′E = E'\oplus E''. The length of E′E' is dim E0E_0, and that of E′′E'' is dim E1E_1.

(v) KerX+E∩X_{+E}\cap ImX+E⊂∑p>0EpX_{+E}\subset \sum_{p>0}E_p and KerX−E∩X_{-E}\cap ImX−E⊂∑p<0EpX_{-E}\subset \sum_{p<0}E_p.

If E is simple, E is generated by a primitive element (Lemma 4), and it suffices to apply Propositions 1 and 2. The general case follows since every finite dimensional sl(2,k\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2, k)-module is semi-simple.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
