Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter IX, § 3. Compact forms of complex semi-simple Lie algebras

a)a) Let g\mathfrak{g} be a real form of a\mathfrak{a} and σ\sigma the conjugation of a\mathfrak{a} relative to g\mathfrak{g}. Then:

σ2=\sigma^2= Ida,σ(λx+μy)=λσ‾(x)+μσ‾(y),[σ(x),σ(y)]=σ[x,y]_{\mathfrak{a}}, \sigma (\lambda x+\mu y) = \overline{\lambda \sigma}(x) + \overline{\mu\sigma}(y),[\sigma (x), \sigma (y)] =\sigma [x, y] (2)

for λ,μ∈C,x,y∈a\lambda , \mu\in \mathbf{C},x, y\in \mathfrak{a}. An element xx of a\mathfrak{a} belongs to g\mathfrak{g} if and only if σ(x)=x\sigma (x) =x.

b) Let σ:a→a\sigma :\mathfrak{a}\rightarrow \mathfrak{a} be a map satisfying (2). Then the set g\mathfrak{g} of fixed points of σ\sigma is a real form of a\mathfrak{a}, and σ\sigma is the conjugation of a\mathfrak{a} relative to g\mathfrak{g}.

The proof is immediate.

Note that if B denotes the Killing form of a\mathfrak{a}, and if g\mathfrak{g} is a real form of a\mathfrak{a}, the restriction of B to g\mathfrak{g} is the Killing form of g\mathfrak{g}; in particular, B is real-valued on g×g\mathfrak{g}\times \mathfrak{g}. Assume that a\mathfrak{a} is reductive; then the real Lie algebra g\mathfrak{g} is compact if and only if the restriction of B to g\mathfrak{g} is negative (§1, no. 3). In that case we say that g\mathfrak{g} is a compact real form of a\mathfrak{a}.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
