Commutative Algebra, chapter III, § 3. m-adic topologies on Noetherian rings

Let AA be a Zariski ring and EE a finitely generated AA-module. If E^\hat{E} is a free AA-module, EE is a free AA-module.

Let mm be a defining ideal of AA, which is therefore contained in the Jacobson radical of AA. We apply the criterion of Chapter II, § 3, no. 5, Proposition 5: the canonical mapping jE:E→E^j_E : E \to \hat{E} defines a bijection iE:E/mE→E^/(mE)∧i_E : E/mE \to \hat{E}/(mE)^{\wedge}; similarly the canonical mapping jA:A→A^j_A : A \to \hat{A} defines a bijection iA:A/m→A^/m^i_A : A/m \to \hat{A}/\hat{m}, which is a ring isomorphism. Then (mE)∧=A^.mE=m^E^(mE)^{\wedge} = \hat{A}.mE = \hat{m}\hat{E} (no. 4, Theorem 3), so that E^/(mE)∧\hat{E}/(mE)^{\wedge} is given an (A^/m^)(\hat{A}/\hat{m})-module structure and hence (by means of iAi_A) an (A/m)(A/m)-module structure. It is immediate that iEi_E is (A/m)(A/m)-linear, so that it is an (A/m)(A/m)-module isomorphism. As E^/m^E^\hat{E}/\hat{m}\hat{E} is a free (A^/m^)(\hat{A}/\hat{m})-module, E/mEE/mE is a free (A/m)(A/m)-module.

On the other hand, let ν:m⊗AE→E\nu : m \otimes_A E \to E be the canonical homomorphism; as (m⊗AE)⊗AA^(m \otimes_A E) \otimes_A \hat{A} is canonically identified with m⊗AE^m \otimes_A \hat{E} and E⊗AA^E \otimes_A \hat{A} with E^\hat{E} (no. 4, Theorem 3), the hypothesis that E^\hat{E} is a free A^\hat{A}-module implies that the homomorphism ν⊗1:m^⊗A^E^→E^\nu \otimes 1 : \hat{m} \otimes_{\hat{A}} \hat{E} \to \hat{E} is injective. As A^\hat{A} is a faithfully flat AA-module (Proposition 9), we conclude that ν\nu is injective (Chapter I, § 3, no. 1, Proposition 2) and the conditions for applying the above mentioned criterion are indeed fulfilled.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
