Commutative Algebra, chapter V, § 2. The lift of prime ideals

With the hypotheses and notation of Theorem 2, the field of fractions kTk^T of AT/(p′∩AT)A^T/(\mathfrak{p}' \cap A^T) is equal to the greatest separable extension ks′k'_s of kk contained in k′k'.

As in Proposition 4 this may be reduced to the case where p\mathfrak{p} is a maximal ideal of AA, which implies that p′\mathfrak{p}', p′∩AZ\mathfrak{p}' \cap A^{\mathbf{Z}} and p′∩AT\mathfrak{p}' \cap A^T are maximal in A′A', AZA^{\mathbf{Z}} and ATA^T respectively (no. 1, Proposition 1).

For all x∈A′x \in A', the polynomial P(X)=∏σ∈GT(X−σ.x)P(X) = \prod_{\sigma \in \mathscr{G}^T} (X - \sigma.x) has its coefficients in the inertia ring ATA^T and, by definition of GT\mathscr{G}^T, all its roots in A′A' are congruent mod. p′\mathfrak{p}'; the polynomial π′(P)\pi'(P) over AT/(p′∩AT)A^T/(\mathfrak{p}' \cap A^T) whose coefficients are the canonical images of those of P under the homomorphism π′:A′→A′/p′\pi':A' \to A'/\mathfrak{p}' therefore has all its roots in A′/p′A'/\mathfrak{p}' equal to the image of xx, which shows that k′k' is a radicial extension of kTk^T; whence ks′⊂kTk'_s \subset k^T, since every element of ks′k'_s is separable over k and a fortiori over kTk^T.

We know that ks′k'_s is a Galois extension of k (Algebra, Chapter V, § 10, no. 9, Proposition 14) and it follows from Theorem 2 that its Galois group is isomorphic to G′=Gz/GT\mathscr{G}' = \mathscr{G}^z / \mathscr{G}^T. As kTk^T is a radicial extension of ks′k'_s, kTk^T is a quasi-Galois extension of k and the separable factor of the degree of kTk^T over k is q=(Gz:GT)q = (\mathscr{G}^z : \mathscr{G}^T ). It remains to see that kTk^T is a separable extension of k. We have seen above that G′\mathscr{G}' is identified with an automorphism group of ATA^T and that AzA^z is the ring of invariants of G′\mathscr{G}'. If x∈ATx \in A^T, the polynomial Q(X)=∏σ′∈G′(X−σ′(x))Q(X) = \prod_{\sigma' \in \mathscr{G}'} (X - \sigma'(x)) therefore has its coefficients in AzA^z; the polynomial over Az/(p′∩Az)A^z / (p' \cap A^z) whose coefficients are the images of those of Q under π′\pi' is of degree qq and has a root π′(x)∈AT/(p′∩AT)\pi'(x) \in A^T / (p' \cap A^T ). As Az/(p′∩Az)=kA^z / (p' \cap A^z) = k by Proposition 4 (ii), we see that every element of kTk^T is of degree ≤q\leq q over k.

This being so, let k, be the field of invariants of the group of k-automorphisms of the quasi-Galois extension kTk^T of kk; then [kT:k1]=q[k^T : k_1] = q (Algebra, Chapter V, § 10, no. 9, Proposition 14). Let uu be a primitive element of kTk^T over k1k_1; as it is of degree qq over k, and of degree ≤q\leq q over k, it is of degree qq over k and its minimal polynomial over k, has coefficients in kk; this shows that uu is separable over k. On the other hand, for all v∈k1v \in k_1, there exists a power p′p' of the characteristic exponent p such that vp′∈kv^{p'} \in k. We conclude that k(u−v)k(u - v), which contains

(u−v)p′=up′−vp′, (u - v)^{p'} = u^{p'} - v^{p'},
contains up′u^{p'} and consequently k(up′)k(u^{p'}). But as uu is separable over kk, k(u)=k(up′)k(u) = k(u^{p'}) (Algebra, Chapter V, § 8, no. 3, Proposition 4), whence k(u)⊂k(u−v)k(u) \subset k(u - v). As uu is of degree qq over k and u−vu - v of degree ≤q\leq q, it follows that k(u)=k(u−v)k(u) = k(u - v), whence v∈k(u)v \in k(u). This shows that vv is separable over k, hence k1=kk_1 = k and kTk^T is separable over kk.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
