Algebra, chapter V, § 3. Algebraic extensions

— Let E be a finitely generated extension of K, generated by the elements a1,...,ama_1, ..., a_m, which are algebraic over K; then E is an extension of finite degree of K. If the degree of aia_i over K(a1,a2,...,ai−1)K(a_1, a_2, ..., a_{i-1}) is nin_i (for 1≤i≤m1 \leq i \leq m), then the degree of E over K is n1n2...nmn_1 n_2 ... n_m and the elements a1v1a2v2...amvma_1^{v_1} a_2^{v_2} ... a_m^{v_m} (0≤vi≤ni−10 \leq v_i \leq n_i - 1) form a basis of E over K.

The elements aivia_i^{v_i} (0≤vi≤ni−10 \leq v_i \leq n_i - 1) form a basis of K(a1,a2,...,ai)K(a_1, a_2, ..., a_i) over K(a1,a2,...,ai−1)K(a_1, a_2, ..., a_{i-1}) by Th. 1, b) of VV, p. 16; the theorem therefore follows by induction on mm from Prop. 25 of II, p. 222.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
