Algebra, chapter V, § 6. Etale algebras

— Let AA be a commutative algebra of finite degree over KK; then [A:K],≤[A:K][A: K], \leq [A: K] with equality if and only if AA is etale.

Let Ω\Omega be an algebraic closure of KK and A?A? the set of algebra homomorphisms of AA into R\mathbf{R}. We have Card A?=[A:K]A? = [A: K], and AA is etale if and only if AA is diagonalized by the extension Ω\Omega of KK (V, p. 30, Prop. 2). Thus Prop. 4 follows from the Cor. of V, p. 29.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
