Algebra, V, p. 68, § 10. Galois extensions

Let E be a subfield of N containing K. For E to have finite degree over K it is necessary and sufficient that g(E) should be open in Γ\Gamma. When this is so, the index (Γ:g(E))(\Gamma : g(E)) is finite and equal to [E : K].

For g(E)g(E) to be open it is necessary and sufficient that there should exist a subextension F of N, of finite degree over K, such that in the notation of V, p. 60.

g(E) contains UF(IdN)=g(F)U_F(\mathrm{Id}_N) = g(F). The relation g(E)⊃g(F)g(E) \supset g(F) is equivalent to E⊂FE \subset F by Cor. 1 (V, p. 68), whence the first assertion of Cor. 5.

Suppose that [E:K][E : K] is finite. Let Ω\Omega be an algebraic closure of KK containing NN as subextension (V, p. 23, Th. 2) and let H\mathscr{H} be the set of KK-homomorphisms of EE into Ω\Omega. Every element of H\mathscr{H} is induced by a KK-automorphism of Ω\Omega (V, p. 52, Prop. 1), and since NN is quasi-Galois over KK, the mapping σ↦σ∣E\sigma \mapsto \sigma|_E of Γ\Gamma into H\mathscr{H} is surjective. For σ\sigma and σ′\sigma' in Γ\Gamma to have the same restriction to EE it is necessary and sufficient that σ−1σ′∈g(E)\sigma^{-1}\sigma' \in g(E), whence Card A?=(Γ:g(E))A? = (\Gamma : g(E)). Finally since EE is an etale algebra over KK, we have Card H=[E:K]\mathscr{H} = [E : K] (V, p. 32, Prop. 4), so in conclusion we have (Γ:g(E))=[E:K](\Gamma : g(E)) = [E : K].

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
