Integration, chapter IX, § 4. Inverse limits of measures

— *Let T=(Ti,pij)\mathscr{T} = (T_i, p_{ij}) be an inverse system of topological spaces indexed by II, TT a topological space and (pi)i∈I(p_i)_{i \in I} a coherent and separating family of continuous mappings pi:T→Tip_i : T \to T_i. Finally, let (μi)i∈I(\mu_i)_{i \in I} be an inverse system of measures on T\mathscr{T}.

For there to exist a bounded measure μ\mu on TT such that pi(μ)=μip_i(\mu) = \mu_i for all i∈Ii \in I, it is necessary and sufficient that the following condition be satisfied:

(P) *for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0, there exists a compact subset KK of TT such that μi∙(Ti−pi(K))≤ε\mu_i^\bullet(T_i - p_i(K)) \leq \varepsilon for all i∈Ii \in I.

When this is so, the measure μ\mu is uniquely determined and*

μ∙(K)=inf⁡iμi∙(pi(K)) \mu^\bullet(K) = \inf_i \mu_i^\bullet(p_i(K))
for every compact set KK in TT.

Let us first prove the uniqueness of μ\mu. Let μ\mu be a bounded measure on TT such that pi(μ)=μip_i(\mu) = \mu_i for all i∈Ii \in I. Let KK be a compact subset of TT; by Prop. 2 of No. 1, the set KK is the intersection of the decreasing directed family (pi−1(pi(K))‾)i∈I(\overline{p_i^{-1}(p_i(K))})_{i \in I} of closed subsets of TT. By the Cor. of Prop. 5 of § 1, No. 6, we therefore have

μ∙(K)=inf⁡i∈Iμ∙(pi−1(pi(K))‾)=inf⁡i∈Iμi∙(pi(K)), \mu^\bullet(K) = \inf_{i \in I} \mu^\bullet(\overline{p_i^{-1}(p_i(K))}) = \inf_{i \in I} \mu_i^\bullet(p_i(K)),

which establishes the formula (2). Since two measures that coincide on the set of compact sets are equal (§ 1, No. 2, Cor. of Prop. 2), it follows that μ\mu is unique.

By Prop. 3, there exists a bounded measure π\pi on TT such that π∙(K)=inf⁡i∈Iμi∙(pi(K))\pi^\bullet(K) = \inf_{i \in I} \mu_i^\bullet(p_i(K)) for every compact subset KK of TT. By formula (2), the existence of a bounded measure μ\mu on TT such that pi(μ)=μip_i(\mu) = \mu_i for all i∈Ii \in I is therefore equivalent to the relation:

(P') pi(π)=μip_i(\pi) = \mu_i for all i∈Ii \in I.

For i≤ji \leq j, we have μi=pij(μj)\mu_i = p_{ij}(\mu_j), whence μi∙(Ti)=μj∙(Tj)\mu_i^\bullet(T_i) = \mu_j^\bullet(T_j); since II is directed, there exists a finite number c≥0c \geq 0 such that μi∙(Ti)=c\mu_i^\bullet(T_i) = c for all i∈Ii \in I. By Prop. 3, the measure μi−pi(π)\mu_i - p_i(\pi) is positive, hence is zero if and only if its total mass is zero, that is, if μi(Ti)=pi(π)∙(Ti)\mu_i(T_i) = p_i(\pi)^\bullet(T_i). Since pi(π)∙(Ti)=π∙(T)p_i(\pi)^\bullet(T_i) = \pi^\bullet(T), the condition (P') is thus equivalent to π∙(T)=c\pi^\bullet(T) = c, that is (§ 1, No. 2, Remark 3) to the property:

(P'') sup⁡K∈Kπ∙(K)=c\sup_{K \in \mathscr{K}} \pi^\bullet(K) = c, where K\mathscr{K} is the set of compact subsets of TT.

Now, for K∈KK \in \mathscr{K}, we have

π∙(K)=inf⁡i∈Iμi∙(pi(K))=c−sup⁡i∈Iμi∙(Ti−pi(K)) \pi^\bullet(K) = \inf_{i \in I} \mu_i^\bullet(p_i(K)) = c - \sup_{i \in I} \mu_i^\bullet(T_i - p_i(K))

and this formula immediately implies the equivalence of (P) and (P'').

Q.E.D.

Let (Ti,pij)(T_i, p_{ij}) be an inverse system of topological spaces. Set T=lim⁡←TiT = \lim_{\leftarrow} T_i and denote by pip_i the canonical mapping of TT into TiT_i. Generalizing Def. 2 of Ch. III, § 4, No. 5, we shall say that a bounded measure μ\mu on TT is the inverse limit of an inverse system (μi)i∈I(\mu_i)_{i \in I} of measures if μi=pi(μ)\mu_i = p_i(\mu) for all i∈Ii \in I. Th. 1 provides a criterion for the existence of inverse limits of measures. When the spaces TiT_i are compact, and the mappings pijp_{ij} surjective, TT is compact and pi(T)=Tip_i(T) = T_i for every i∈Ii \in I; the condition (P) is therefore fulfilled, and in this case we recover Prop. 8, (iv) of Ch. III, § 4, No. 5.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
