Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 5. Solvable Lie algebras

Let xx be an endomorphism of a finite-dimensional vector space V and s (resp. n) its semi-simple (resp. nilpotent) component (cf. Algebra, Chapter VIII, § 9, no. 4, Definition 4). Let ad x,ad s,ad n\mathrm{ad}\, x, \mathrm{ad}\, s, \mathrm{ad}\, n be the respective images of x,s,nx, s, n in the adjoint representation of gl(V)\mathfrak{gl}(V). Then ad s\mathrm{ad}\, s (resp. ad n\mathrm{ad}\, n) is the semi-simple (resp. nilpotent) component of ad x\mathrm{ad}\, x and is equal to a polynomial in ad x\mathrm{ad}\, x with coefficients in K and no constant term.

We know that ad x=ad s+ad n,[ad s,ad n]=0\mathrm{ad}\, x = \mathrm{ad}\, s + \mathrm{ad}\, n, [\mathrm{ad}\, s, \mathrm{ad}\, n] = 0 and ad n\mathrm{ad}\, n is nilpotent (§4§ 4, Lemma 1). We show that ad s\mathrm{ad}\, s is semi-simple. It suffices to do this when K is algebraically closed (cf. Algebra, Chapter VIII, § 9, no. 2, Proposition 3). Then let (ei)1≤i≤n(e_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n} be a basis of V such that s(ei)=λieis(e_i) = \lambda_i e_i (λi∈K\lambda_i \in K). Let (Eij)(E_{ij}) be the canonical basis of Mn(K)=gl(V)M_n(K) = \mathfrak{gl}(V). By formulae (5) of §1§ 1,

(ad s)⋅Eij=(λi−λj)Eij (\mathrm{ad}\, s)\cdot E_{ij} = (\lambda_i - \lambda_j)E_{ij}

and hence ad s\mathrm{ad}\, s is semi-simple. The last assertion of the lemma follows from Algebra, Chapter VIII, § 9, no. 4, Proposition 8.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
