General Topology, chapter I, § 9. Compact spaces and locally compact spaces

*If XX is a locally compact σ\sigma-compact space, there is a sequence (Un)(U_n) of relatively compact open subsets of XX which cover XX, such that U‾n⊂Un+1\overline{U}_n \subset U_{n+1} for each nn.

Let XX be the union of a sequence (Kn)(K_n) of compact sets. Let U1U_1 be a relatively compact open neighbourhood of K1K_1 (no. 7, Proposition 10) and define UnU_n inductively for n>1n > 1 to be a relatively compact open neighbourhood of U‾n−1∈Kn\overline{U}_{n-1} \in K_n (no. 3, Proposition 5; no. 7, Proposition 10). The sequence (Un)(U_n) clearly has the required properties.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
