General Topology, chapter I, § 10. Proper mappings

Let II be a finite set and for each i∈Ii \in I let fi:Xi→Yif_i : X_i \to Y_i be a continuous mapping. Let X=∏i∈IXi, Y=∏i∈IYi,X = \prod_{i \in I} X_i, \ Y = \prod_{i \in I} Y_i, and let f:X→Yf : X \to Y be the product mapping (xi)→(fi(xi))(x_i) \to (f_i(x_i)). Then: a) If each of the fif_i is proper, then ff is proper. b) If ff is proper and if the XiX_i are non-empty, then each of the fif_i is proper.

(We shall see in no. 2, Theorem 1, Corollary 3, that this proposition extends to infinite products.)

By induction it is enough to consider the case where I={1,2}I = \{1, 2\}. a) Suppose that f1,f2f_1, f_2 are proper, and let ZZ be a topological space; f1×f2×ιZf_1 \times f_2 \times \iota_Z is the composition of ιY1×f2×ιZ\iota_{Y_1} \times f_2 \times \iota_Z and

f1×ιX2×ιZ; f_1 \times \iota_{X_2} \times \iota_Z;
these two mappings are closed by hypothesis, hence so is f1×f2×ιZf_1 \times f_2 \times \iota_Z [§ 5, no. 1, Proposition 1 a)], whence f1×f2f_1 \times f_2 is proper.

b) Now suppose ff is proper. Let FF be a closed subset of X2×ZX_2 \times Z and let GG be the image of FF in Y2×ZY_2 \times Z under the mapping f2×ιZf_2 \times \iota_Z. Then the image of X1×FX_1 \times F in Y1×Y2×ZY_1 \times Y_2 \times Z under f1×f2×ιZf_1 \times f_2 \times \iota_Z is f1(X1)×Gf_1(X_1) \times G. By hypothesis, this is closed in Y1×Y2×ZY_1 \times Y_2 \times Z; if X1≠∅X_1 \neq \emptyset, then f1(X1)f_1(X_1) is not empty, which implies that GG is closed in Y2×ZY_2 \times Z (§ 4, no. 3, Corollary to Proposition 7); hence f2f_2 is proper. Similarly f1f_1 is proper if X2≠∅X_2 \neq \emptyset.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
