General Topology, chapter II, § 2. Uniformly continuous functions

Let XX be a set, let (Yi)i∈I(Y_i)_{i \in I} be a family of uniform spaces, and for each i∈Ii \in I let fif_i be a mapping of XX into YiY_i. For each i∈Ii \in I let gig_i denote fi×fif_i \times f_i. Let S\mathfrak{S} be the set of subsets of X×XX \times X of the form gi‾(Vi)\overline{g_i}(V_i), where i∈Ii \in I and ViV_i is an entourage of YiY_i, and let B\mathfrak{B} be the set of all finite intersections

(1)U(Vi1,…,Vin)=gi1‾(Vi1)∩⋯∩gin‾(Vin) \text{(1)} \quad U(V_{i_1}, \ldots, V_{i_n}) = \overline{g_{i_1}}(V_{i_1}) \cap \cdots \cap \overline{g_{i_n}}(V_{i_n})

of sets of S\mathfrak{S}. Then B\mathfrak{B} is a fundamental system of entourages of a uniformity U\mathfrak{U} on XX which is the initial uniform structure on XX with respect to the family (fi)(f_i) (Set Theory, Chapter IV, § 2, no. 3), and in particular U\mathfrak{U} is the coarsest uniformity on XX for which all the mappings fif_i are uniformly continuous. But otherwise, let hh be a mapping of a uniform space ZZ into XX; then hh is uniformly continuous (when XX is endowed with the uniformity U\mathfrak{U}) if and only if each of the mappings fi∘hf_i \circ h is uniformly continuous.

It is immediately seen that B\mathfrak{B} satisfies axioms (B1)(B_1) and (U1′)(U'_1). If Wi=g‾i−1(Vi)W_i = \overline{g}_i^{-1}(V_i), then W‾i=g‾i−1(V‾i)\overline{W}_i = \overline{g}_i^{-1}(\overline{V}_i) and W˙i=g˙i−1(V˙i)\dot{W}_i = \dot{g}_i^{-1}(\dot{V}_i); hence B\mathfrak{B} also satisfies axioms (UII′)(U'_{II}) and (UIII′)(U'_{III}) and is therefore a fundamental system of entourages of a uniformity U\mathfrak{U} on XX. Furthermore, it follows immediately from the definition of U\mathfrak{U} and Definition 1 and no. 1 that fif_i is uniformly continuous for each index i∈Ii \in I; hence (no. 1, Proposition 2) fi∘hf_i \circ h is uniformly continuous for each i∈Ii \in I if hh is. Conversely, suppose that fi∘hf_i \circ h is uniformly continuous for each i∈Ii \in I, and consider a set U(Vi1,…,Vin)U(V_{i_1}, \ldots, V_{i_n}); by hypothesis, for each kk such that 1≤k≤n1 \leq k \leq n, there is an entourage WkW_k of ZZ such that the relation (z,z′)∈Wk(z, z') \in W_k implies [fik(h(z)),fik(h(z′))]∈Vk[f_{i_k}(h(z)), f_{i_k}(h(z'))] \in V_k; if

W=⋂kWk, W = \bigcap_k W_k,
these nn relations are simultaneously satisfied whenever zz and z′z' are WW-close, so that we have then (h(z),h(z′))∈U(Vi1,…,Vin)(h(z), h(z')) \in U(V_{i_1}, \ldots, V_{i_n}), and the proof is complete.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
