General Topology, chapter IX, § 3. Metrizable groups, valued fields, normed spaces and algebras

Let GG be an abelian group, written additively, and let x→∣x∣x \to |x| be a mapping G→RG \to \mathbf{R} which satisfies conditions a), b) and c) above. Then the function d(x,y)=∣x−y∣d(x, y) = |x - y| is an invariant metric on GG; the topology T\mathscr{T} which it defines on GG is compatible with the group structure of GG, and the uniformity defined by dd is the same as the uniformity of the topological group obtained by endowing GG with the topology T\mathscr{T}.

The function d(x,y)d(x, y) is a metric on GG, for the relation d(x,y)=0d(x, y) = 0 is equivalent to x=yx = y by c); we have d(x,y)=d(y,x)d(x, y) = d(y, x) by a); and

d(x,y)=∣(x−z)+(z−y)∣≤∣x−z∣+∣z−y∣=d(x,z)+d(z,y) d(x, y) = |(x - z) + (z - y)| \leq |x - z| + |z - y| = d(x, z) + d(z, y)

by b). Moreover, dd is invariant, since (x+z)−(y+z)=x−y(x + z) - (y + z) = x - y. For each real number x>0x > 0, let VxV_x be the set of all x∈Gx \in G such that ∣x∣<x|x| < x; then the VxV_x form a fundamental system S\mathfrak{S} of neighbourhoods of 00 for the topology T\mathscr{T}, and since dd is invariant, a+Sa + \mathfrak{S} is a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of aa for the topology T\mathscr{T}, for each a∈Ga \in G. By a), the VxV_x are symmetric, and by b), we have Va+Vx⊂V2aV_a + V_x \subset V_{2a}; hence the topology T\mathscr{T} is compatible with the group structure of GG (Chapter III, § 1, no. 2). The last part of the proposition follows immediately.

Conditions a', b' and c' are equivalent to c) together with the condition

∣x−y∣≤∣x∣+∣y∣. |x - y| \leq |x| + |y|.

For a' and b' clearly imply b'); conversely, taking x=0x = 0 in b') and using c), we see that ∣−y∣≤∣y∣|-y| \leq |y|; replacing yy by −y-y it follows that ∣−y∣=∣y∣|-y| = |y|, which is a); replacing yy by −y-y in b') we then get b').

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
