General Topology, chapter IX, § 3. Metrizable groups, valued fields, normed spaces and algebras
An absolute value on a division ring K is a mapping of K into which satisfies the following conditions:
(VM_I) if and only if . (VM_II) for all in K. (VM_III) for all in K.
By (VM_II) we have , and since by (VM_I) there is at least one x such that , we have ; it follows that , hence and consequently
therefore for all in K. We can therefore say that is an invariant metric on the additive group K, and that the mapping is a homomorphism of the multiplicative group of non-zero elements of into the multiplicative group of real numbers .
The invariant metric defines a metric space topology on , compatible with its additive group structure (no. 1, Proposition 3); but, moreover, this topology is compatible with the division ring structure of . For the continuity of on follows from the relation
which gives
Likewise, the continuity of at every point follows from the identity , which gives, by (VM_{II}),
now if is such that , the relation implies , whence ; and this establishes the continuity of at the point .
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
