General Topology, chapter IX, § 3. Metrizable groups, valued fields, normed spaces and algebras

Let EE be a normed space over a non-discrete valued division ring, let pp be the norm on EE, and let E^\hat{E} be the additive topological group which is the completion of the additive group EE. Then the function (t,x)→tx(t, x) \to tx can be extended by continuity to K^×E^\hat{K} \times \hat{E} and defines on E^\hat{E} a vector space structure over K^\hat{K}; the norm pp can be extended by continuity to a norm pˉ\bar{p} on E^\hat{E} which defines the topology of E^\hat{E}.

The extension of txtx by continuity is a particular case of the theorem of extension of a continuous bilinear mapping of a product of two abelian groups into a third (Chapter III, § 6, no. 5, Theorem 1); we have 1.x=x1.x = x and t(ux)=(tu)xt(u x) = (t u)x for t∈K^t \in \hat{K}, u∈K^u \in \hat{K} and x∈E^x \in \hat{E}, by the principle of extension of identities; hence the external law (t,x)→tx(t, x) \to t x indeed defines on E^\hat{E} a structure of a vector space over K^\hat{K}. On the other hand, the invariant metric d‾(x,y)=p‾(x−y)\overline{d}(x, y) = \overline{p}(x - y) extends to an invariant metric d‾\overline{d} on E^\hat{E} (§ 2, no. 1, Proposition 1) which defines the topology of E^\hat{E}; if we set p‾(x)=d‾(0,x)\overline{p}(x) = \overline{d}(0, x), then p‾\overline{p} is the extension of pp by continuity, and satisfies axioms (NO_I) and (NO_{II}); by virtue of the continuity of txt x on K^×E^\hat{K} \times \hat{E}, p‾\overline{p} also satisfies (NO_{III}) (principle of extension of identities) and is therefore a norm on E^\hat{E}.

When we have to consider a definite normed space structure on a vector space EE, we shall usually denote the norm of a vector xx by ∣∣x∣∣||x||, unless this notation is likely to lead to confusion.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
