Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VIII, § 8. Symmetric invariants

Let a\mathfrak{a} be a semi-simple Lie algebra and s∈s\in Aut(a\mathfrak{a}). The following conditions are equivalent:

(i) s∈s\in Aut0(a)_0(\mathfrak{a});

(ii) for any invariant polynomial function ff on a\mathfrak{a}, we have f∘s=ff\circ s=f.

By extending scalars if necessary, we can assume that kk is algebraically closed. The implication (i) =⇒=\Rightarrow (ii) follows from Prop. 3. We assume that condition (ii) is satisfied and prove (i). In view of Prop. 3, and §5, no. 3, Cor. 1 of Prop. 5, we can assume that s∈s\in Aut(g,h\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) and that ss leaves stable a Weyl chamber C. Let x∈C∩hQx\in C\cap \mathfrak{h}_{\mathbf{Q}}. We have sx∈Csx\in C. If gg is a W-invariant polynomial function on h\mathfrak{h}, we have g(x)=g(sx)g(x) =g(sx) (Th. 1 (i)). By Lemma 6, it follows that sx∈Wxsx\in Wx. Since sx∈Csx\in C, we have x=sxx=sx (Chap. V, §3, no. 3, Th. 2). Then s∣h=s|\mathfrak{h}= Idh_{\mathfrak{h}}, and s∈s\in Aut0(g,h)(_0(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h}) (§5, no. 2, Prop. 4).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
