Commutative Algebra, chapter IV, § 2. Primary decomposition

Let AA be a Noetherian ring, MM an AA-module, NN a submodule of MM and I=Ass(M/N)I = \mathrm{Ass}(M/N). Let SS be a multiplicative subset of AA and JJ the subset of II consisting of the indices i such that S∩pi=∅S \cap p_i = \varnothing. Let N′N' be the saturation of NN with respect to SS in MM. Then:

(i) If (Qi)i∈I(Q_i)_{i \in I} is an element of DI(M/N)D_I(M/N), the family (Qi)i∈J(Q_i)_{i \in J} is an element of DJ(M/N′)D_J(M/N') and the family (S−1Qi)i∈J(S^{-1}Q_i)_{i \in J} is an element of DJ(S−1M/S−1N)D_J(S^{-1}M/S^{-1}N).

(ii) The mapping (Qi)i∈J→(S−1Qi)i∈J(Q_i)_{i \in J} \to (S^{-1}Q_i)_{i \in J} is a bijection of DJ(M/N′)D_J(M/N') onto DJ(S−1M/S−1N)D_J(S^{-1}M/S^{-1}N).

(iii) If (Qi)i∈J(Q_i)_{i \in J} is an element of DJ(M/N′)D_J(M/N') and (Ri)i∈I(R_i)_{i \in I} an element of DI(M/N)D_I(M/N), the family (Ti)i∈I(T_i)_{i \in I} such that Ti=QiT_i = Q_i for i∈Ji \in J and Ti=RiT_i = R_i for i∈I−Ji \in I - J is an element of DI(M/N)D_I(M/N).

(i) We know (no. 1, Proposition 3) that for i∈J,S−1Qii \in J, S^{-1}Q_i is primary for S−1piS^{-1}p_i and that for i∈I−J,S−1Qi=S−1Mi \in I - J, S^{-1}Q_i = S^{-1}M; as S−1N=⋂S−1QiS^{-1}N = \bigcap S^{-1}Q_i (Chapter II, § 2, no. 4), then also S−1N=⋂i∈JS−1QiS^{-1}N = \bigcap_{i \in J} S^{-1}Q_i. The S−1piS^{-1}p_i for i∈Ji \in J are distinct and their set is Ass⁡(S−1M/S−1N)\operatorname{Ass}(S^{-1}M/S^{-1}N) (§1§ 1, no. 2, Corollary to Proposition 5); then (Proposition 4) (S−1Qi)i∈J(S^{-1}Q_i)_{i \in J} is a reduced primary decomposition of S−1NS^{-1}N. Moreover, Qi=(iMS)−1(S−1Qi)Q_i = (i_M^S)^{-1}(S^{-1}Q_i) (no. 1 Proposition 3), hence N′=(iMS)−1(S−1N)=⋂i∈JQiN' = (i_M^S)^{-1}(S^{-1}N) = \bigcap_{i \in J} Q_i and (Qi)i∈J(Q_i)_{i \in J} is obviously a reduced primary decomposition of N′N' in MM.

(ii) As S−1N′=S−1NS^{-1}N' = S^{-1}N, we may replace NN by N′N', that is suppose that J=IJ = I. Let (Pi)i∈I(P_i)_{i \in I} be a reduced primary decomposition of S−1NS^{-1}N in S−1MS^{-1}M and let us write Qi=(iMS)−1(Pi)Q_i = (i_M^S)^{-1}(P_i); it follows from no. 1, Proposition 3 that QiQ_i is primary for pip_i (i∈Ii \in I) and (Qi)i∈I(Q_i)_{i \in I} is then a reduced primary decomposition of NN in MM by virtue of no. 3, Corollary to Proposition 4. Finally, as, for all i∈Ii \in I and every submodule Qi′Q'_i of which MM is pip_i-primary with respect to M,Qi′=(iMS)−1(S−1Qi′)M, Q'_i = (i_M^S)^{-1}(S^{-1}Q'_i) by virtue of no. 1, Proposition 3 and the hypothesis J=IJ = I, we see that two mappings DI(M/N)→DI(S−1M/S−1N)D_I(M/N) \to D_I(S^{-1}M/S^{-1}N) and DI(S−1M/S−1N)→DI(M/N)D_I(S^{-1}M/S^{-1}N) \to D_I(M/N) have been defined whose compositions are the identities on DI(M/N)D_I(M/N) and DI(S−1M/S−1N)D_I(S^{-1}M/S^{-1}N), which proves (ii).

(iii) By virtue of (i), N′=⋂i∈JRiN' = \bigcap_{i \in J} R_i, whence

N=N′∩⋂i∈I−JRi=(⋂i∈JQi)∩(⋂i∈I−JRi) N = N' \cap \bigcap_{i \in I - J} R_i = \left( \bigcap_{i \in J} Q_i \right) \cap \left( \bigcap_{i \in I - J} R_i \right)

and it follows immediately from no. 3, Corollary to Proposition 4 that this primary decomposition is reduced.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
